Quwwat ul-Islam Mosque

Quwwat ul-Islam Mosque
Literally meaning "Might of Islam Mosque." This name is a corruption of Qubbat ul-Islam Mosque," lit-erally "Dome of Islam Mosque." It is the earliest mosque built after the Ghaurid conquest of Delhi. According to a surviving inscription, this large complex, which includes the famous 'Alai Darwaza and Qutb Minar, was built out of the material taken from 27 temples. The presence of false arches here is indicative of the use of local archi-tects more familiar with trabeated forms.
